A big congratulations to the All Blacks - World Cup Champions! It was a nail biting final, but they got there in the end. As you all know, Jason (Mr FF) is a Kiwi and loves the All Blacks a lot (even more than fabric! ) so he is one happy man. He was in the crowd when the All Blacks won the first World Cup 24 years ago and has been waiting a very long time to see a win again. Even our little munchkin who really has no interest in Rugby told me he would cry if the All Blacks lost!

Ok Calling For Donations! We are holding a charity auction for Camp Autism a registered charity organization that runs amazing camps for families with children with ASD. Many of these families spend so much money on therapies that they cannot afford to go away, these camps offer a wonderful respite for these amazing families.http://campautism.org/aboutus.html
All payment of auction goods will be paid directly to the organization, we will not handle any funds.
We are looking for any goods at all, donated by our lovely crafty customers. In return not only will you be helping families in need, you will also be promoted on our Facebook page, with regular updates and links to your page or website, promoted on twitter and our blog and will have a permanent link on our blog for one month.
All we need is a photo, an rrp and postage costs. Once the winner has paid we will email you and you post directly to the recipient. They will pay you directly for the postage costs.

Beautiful certified organic Storyboek by Birch Fabrics has finally arrived! We were lucky enough to meet the designers Cynthia and Jason during our Salt Lake City trip - and what a terrific couple! I love their fabrics, and the fact that they are fair trade and certified organic - all the better!

This collection features delicate designs, muted tones and co-ordinates so beautifully together. I just saw a sneak peak at their amazing new designs due for release next year and I am excited!

Upside down and inside out!

This week our world was turned upside down, and it will never quite be the right way up again. Bam, in a few seconds, in the space of the time it takes a doctor to finish a sentence, everything that was normal, will never be "normal" again, everything in your world changes. No matter how much you want things to stay the same, no matter how you wish your lovely happy, secure world will stay that way, it won't.

Our son, our precious baby, who we adore, was diagnosed on Tuesday. No it is not life threatening, but it is life changing, for all of us. His life will never be easy, it will always be a struggle. Things that come so easily to the rest of us, will be a struggle for him. All we want for him is happiness, and that will be hard for him, harder than for the average person. He will need to learn things, that come so naturally to 99% of us. He will learn to sometimes be someone he really isn't, just to be accepted.

Our lives will soon consist of "sessions" of therapy, classes, support group meetings, teacher meetings, school visits, spending time helping in class, and it goes on. Our beautiful boy will have a label, he will be different.

Of course we love his differences, he is funny, amazingly intelligent, has an endless thirst for knowledge and a unique perspective on life. He possesses a general knowledge well beyond his years, he is a brilliant reader and a maths wiz. He loves to travel, he loves Lego and Harry Potter, just like other little boys, but he just thinks and uses his brain differently to most of us. He can't read facial and body language, he won't ever be able to play team sports, he won't ever truly feel empathy for people he does not know. He will sometimes appear rude to strangers who do not know him, he struggles with change, he struggles with friendships and doesn't always get the joke, he is very literal. He is sensitve to sound, and smell and cannot touch certain things. He worries and sometimes cannot sleep. With the right help and guidance though, he will develop into an amazing adult, he will always be a bit different, but with time we hope people won't consider him strange, just quirky!

My fear is that the world can be a hard and hurtful place. One in four children are bullied at school, yes one in four - how horrific is that? And our little boy will be the perfect target for the bully. They like to pick on the child that is different, the loner.

I try to put things in perspective, I know so many people have more to worry about than us. I know we will get through this, but that doesn't stop the tears. I have cried til I thought I could not cry anymore. I haven't slept all week, I am a wreck. I am strong but I sometimes wonder if I am strong enough to get through this. I have a family to support and love, but it is hard.

I always imagined that life would get easy once I hit 40. I had 3 children by the time I was 30, so was looking forward to kicking back, travelling, and building my business. Then my munchkin arrived just before my 40th birthday. He has brought the most wonderful love to my family. We all adore his kisses and cuddles, his bad jokes and his endless enthusiasm for his family and his hobbies, none of us can imagine our lives without him - he has 3 amazing older siblings, who will also always be there for him.

I lie in bed at night and imagine a world of tolerance. A world, where no one discriminates, no one judges and everyone is accepting. How wonderful would that be?

Busy Week!

We have had a super busy week here at Funky Fabrix. We arrived home from New Zealand on Thursday and have been catching up ever since!

A special thanks to Marie and Kitty for keeping things running so smoothly whilst we were away.

You may have heard, that I had a little accident with my laptop! I spilt a bottle of water on the lovely new Macbook Pro and it has gone not only into the keyboard but also the screen. I am taking it out to Apple tomorrow, so here's hoping they take pity on me and fix it! I did not back up so it does have all my holiday snaps, and also all my work related images and invoices and the like.

I have also lost all my emails, so if you were waiting to hear back from me and haven't please send me another email. I know there were a few things I was going to chase up when I got home, but now don't have any access to that information, so hopefully if you are one of those people waiting for an email, I do hope you get to read this post and email me again!

I am now using a very slow, but inexpensive laptop til I wait for news on my super fast one. So I will plod along! I am now thinking a desk top seems like a good idea, but as I like to work from home and the office, I really love keeping all my information in just one place - I need to remember to back up next time!

This week we farewelled Kitty! Kitty has been working part time for Funky Fabrix for the last few years, while she studied year 12 and then while she studied Floristry.

Kitty has now almost finished Floristry and has started a new full time position for a busy florist in Brisbane City. We will certainly miss having Kitty in the store with us (but as she is my eldest daughter I do still get to see her smiling face every day!).

Kitty is responsible for all the pretty bundles in store. I will now have to make the bundles but I can't promise I will tie those ribbons as well as Kit.

Good luck Baby, you will make the BEST florist!!

We met the lovely Jennifer Moore and her husband from Monaluna at the Salt Lake City Market, which was one of our highlights. I have long admired Jennifer's work and think she is one of the most talented designers around. I first fell in love with her work with her first collection for Robert Kaufman and just adore her own organic ranges.

Jennifer's beautiful new ranges will be store very soon, plus we have new stock of her older ranges in stock right now. You will even find some of Jennifer's Kaufman ranges in our store too.

Introducing Pattern's by Figgy's. We were so glad we met Karen and Shelly at the SLC market! We just love these patterns. In fact many styles have sold out already, but the good news is, more are on their way! Not all are on the website, but will be by the end of today.

May is here, so the countdown til we leave for the Spring Quilt Market in Salt Lake City has begun!

We leave Monday week - eekk! 10 days without my babies, 10 days of alone time with Mr FF not to mention fabric, fabric and more fabric!

I think the most exciting thing will be the Sample Spree night where us retailers get to grab (and by the sounds of things, GRAB is the correct word) fabrics not yet released to the market. This will be a great opportunity to get our hands on fat quarter packs to pass onto our customers, so you will be the first in Australia with the latest and greatest!

We will also be attending some informative classes by designers such as Valori Wells - how exciting is that? We will get a chance to meet and mingle with most of the well know fabric designers in the US! I will be sure to take lots of pics for you all.

In the meantime, in the countdown to our trip we have some great giveaways. First one up is a fat quarter pack of the gorgeous new organic fabric Pick A Bunch in the Orchid colourway (as shown above).

Our vintage fabric of the week!

As you may know, we have been avid collectors of vintage fabric for many years (it is how Funky Fabric all began! ) Back in the beginning we were Atomic Textiles and sold mainly vintage fabric to many collectors, movie studios, galleries and decorators world wide. Well, we still have bolts, and bolts, and bolts of vintage fabric! Some we will never sell, other pieces we can manage to part with.
If you live in Brisbane you can pop into our store and view many of the vintage fabrics. Unfortunately I have yet to find time to list them online but hopefully we will be able to update our vintage fabric website later in the year.
We will be listing a "vintage fabric of the week" each Monday. You can pop me an email if you are interested in purchasing or you can visit our retail store.

This week's fabric is a Dekoplus fabric (from the Netherlands). This gorgeous bold fabric is circa late 1960s and is in mint condition. Unused and perfect, still on the bolt. Fabric is 100% medium weight cotton and is 120cm in width.
Price is $45 per half metre plus registered post costs.

This is our new store in progress! We are hoping to open our new store this coming weekend, but will update this depending on our progress today!

Our new store will be still located in Blackwood St, just up the street!

New store = lower overheads = lower prices for our customers! A win-win situation!

We will also be introducing website order pickup to make shopping with Funky Fabrix even more convenient. The new store setup will allow us to streamline packing and processing proceedures and less retail hours will allow even faster processing of orders and more precious time with our 4 children.

We are very excited about this move, it will improve our customer service and help us prioritise our lives a little so that we remember the important things in life!

We stumbled upon this gorgeous little store in the Adelaide Hills (Hahndorf) during our travels yesterday. Full or eco goodness, lots of local and handmade goodness here. This store is gorgeous and with so many must have goodies, I really enjoyed my visit!

One Week Ago......

One week has passed since that terrible day in Christchurch. Today all of New Zealand stood still for 2 minutes to reflect and remember.

The past week has reminded us to be grateful for our family and friends and cherish every moment.

This week has also shown the amazing spirit and generosity of New Zealanders. They have come together to help each other in this time of need, they have opened their hearts and homes to total strangers, they have shown a spirit of resolve to rebuild and start again.

I have also been overwhelmed and proud of Australia's contribution.

Christchurch has a long road ahead. Please help if you can, please donate, please give what you can. If you have planned to visit the South Island this year, please still go. We visit the beautiful South Island every year and this year will be no exception.

Would you like to help raise money for Christchurch? I don't think there has been anyone that has not been deeply moved by the events in Christchurch and by the mammoth task that these people will face in the months and years ahead.

Jason is from Christchurch and it is a place we both very much love. We visit every year and we are always touched by the generosity and kindness of New Zealand people. As many of you know, my heart very much lies in New Zealand and I would dearly love to live there one day.

We are so excited about 2011! Funky Fabrix is going to continue to lead the Australian market place by travelling in a new path and direction this year. We will still continue to bring you all the fabrics that have become our signature style in the last 5 years, but will also be focusing on the Earth...........lots of natural fibres, Earth friendly recycled materials, organics, bamboos, Australian designer fabric, handprinted fabrics, and our very own range of handprinted organic textiles, plus and even more patterns, sewing needs including thread, buttons, and more.

Our wonderful designer is working on our new website as we type and we are so excited! And I am slowly designing our new range (I stress the slowly). Fabric design is a new medium for me, I have worked on canvas, ceramics and in the areas of Architecture and Interior Design, but designing with a computer is all new to me! So once again I stress the SLOWLY!

We will also be attending the US International Quilt Markets this year, in May and October. We hope this will mean even lower prices for our customers, and the opportunity to bring you all the latest fabrics and trends first here on Funky Fabrix.

French Fabric

We have found such beautiful textiles in the Alsace region of France, home of French fabrics. All the fabrics above are printed in the Alsace region and as you can see red it definately in! Handprinted hearts on a linen base and featured everywhere here! Red in my favourite colour, so I am delighted to see so much of it everywhere!

We have giving away two gorgeous Alsace fabric pieces (shown in the bottom photo). Each piece of French Toile is approx. 30cm x 40cm and is unique to the French Alsace region.

We are so excited to have Laurie Wisbrun's new range Tufted Tweets in store. I have been waiting for this range to arrive, for what seems like, forever! I think it is the Architect in me, but I just love the sleek Architectural lines and the subject matter of this fabric.

Laurie is really an inspiration for aspiring textile designers. Laurie started out printing her own fabrics before designing for Robert Kaufman fabrics. She is even writing a book about textile printing and design.

We have a few prints now available online and the remainder of the collection will be available over the coming week. I hope you all love this range as much as we do.

I have a new favourite designer. I was so excited when I discovered Ann Kelle designed fabrics on the Robert Kaufman website.

My son bought me a gorgeous Ann Kelle journal for Christmas and I have been a fan ever since.

I just love the simplicity of her designs and the use of bright, bold colours. Her fabrics remind me of 1970s Scandivian designed Children's fabrics, for which I have a passion. I have many such fabrics in my vintage collection stash. I am not sure what I will do with them, but I just can't part with them.

Guess what we did Father's Day?

Sometimes it takes special days to remind us to take time off, and to spend time with family and friends.
We tend to work 7 days per week with our busy business, but sometimes it pays to sit back and realise what is important.

As you all know, time goes by so quickly, and it doesn't take long for your little ones to become adults themselves, I know I have 3 grown up children plus my little one.

We had a really great day last Sunday, enjoying our family and not working!

It really has made me rethink my work/family priorities, I have to learn to delegate more, and just to relax! So if you see me working on weekends, just give me a little reminder of what I should be doing! Emails can wait til Mondays.....

Vintage Fabric Garage Sale!

As many of you may know, Funky Fabrix started out as a vintage fabric store. Over time we have been so busy keeping up with Funky Fabrix new fabric division, our vintage fabric has been sadly neglected!

We still have store rooms full of gorgeous vintage fabric, which really deserve a new home. Ofcourse we will not part with it all. We collect vintage Scandinavian textiles, so we will be keeping these plus most of our bolts (for a new project next year) but we would love to find homes for the many pieces we have in our collection.

............so we are having a vintage fabric garage sale! Yes you can come along to Funky Fabrix (Mitchelton, Brisbane) on Saturday afternoon October 9th and Sunday morning October 10 to purchase vintage fabric pieces from our collection.

We would love to have held it sooner, but thanks to our fantastic customers, we have just been too busy to get organised! We have a new staff member starting this week, so that should give us some spare time to unearth all our vintage fabric treasures in time for the sale!

So don't forget pencil in October 9th and 10th in your diary!

End of Bolt Packs

We have had many requests for packs of our end of bolt pieces, so they are now available on our website!

Each pack contains at least 1m of fabric in length and consists of pieces between 10 - 20cm in length by the full width of fabric.

Fabrics are randomly chosen for each pack, but are full of Funky Fabrix goodness. All fabrics are high quality cotton or cotton linen fabrics, and are all very funky!

You can purchase your packs here. These packs will be available in limited quantities while stock lasts.

Queenstown, New Zealand

We are still in beautiful Queenstown. We went for a drive "up the road" to a pretty little place called Glenorchy!
Magnificent scenery on the 45 minute drive, and we were blessed with a lovely sunny day. It was only 2 degrees but the magnificent sunshine meant that we were able to sit outside for lunch.
